Symbolic wedding in Italy: what it is, whether it is legal, and how to combine it with a civil ceremony
In short: a symbolic wedding has no legal effect in Italy. Most foreign couples sign the legal paperwork in their home country, then celebrate a symbolic ceremony in Italy with their guests. It gives you full freedom over the place, the time, the language and the words.
What is a symbolic wedding?
A symbolic wedding is a ceremony led by a celebrant, written around the couple's story, with no civil or religious validity. It looks and feels like a wedding: the walk down the aisle, readings, vows, the exchange of rings and the first kiss. It simply does not create a legal marriage.
Is a symbolic wedding legal in Italy?
No, and it does not need to be. In Italy a marriage is legally valid only if it is celebrated by a civil registrar at the town hall (Comune), or in a religious ceremony recognised by the state. Any couple can hold a symbolic ceremony, anywhere, with any celebrant they choose.
How do couples make it legal?
There are three common routes:
| Route | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Legal at home, symbolic in Italy | You sign at your local registry office, before or after the trip | Most couples: simplest paperwork, full freedom on the day |
| Civil wedding in Italy | A registrar marries you at the Comune, in Italian with an interpreter | Couples who want the legal date to be the Italian date |
| Religious wedding in Italy | A church wedding with civil effect, through the parish | Couples who want a religious ceremony |
A civil wedding in Italy requires documents from your own country, which differ by nationality. British citizens, for example, apply for a nulla osta (certificate of no impediment) through the British Embassy in Rome. US citizens need an Atto Notorio from an Italian consulate in the US and a sworn declaration at a US consulate in Italy. Requirements change, so always confirm with your embassy, the Comune or your wedding planner.
Why do couples choose a symbolic ceremony?
- Any place: an olive grove, a masseria courtyard, a terrace over the sea, a beach.
- Any time: including sunset, when the light in Puglia is at its best.
- Any language: or a mix of languages, so every guest understands.
- Your story, not a formula: the ceremony is written for you, with your words, readings and rituals.
- No paperwork in Italy: no documents, translations or appointments at the town hall.
What happens on the day?
The ceremony usually lasts 15 to 25 minutes, depending on how many people speak. There is no fixed script: we shape it together around your story, choosing whether to include readings, vows and rituals, such as a sand ceremony or a moment for loved ones who are missing.
